At Avarvarii Automotive Artworks, one of the most rewarding parts of my job isn’t just predicting the future of production cars—it’s helping passionate gearheads bring their wildest personal project cars to life before a single wrench is turned.
RRecently, a follower on Instagram reached out to me with a brilliant, ambitious vision. He is currently working on a 1984 Subaru GL station wagon. But he isn't aiming for a factory-spec restoration; he wants to completely transform this humble, boxy 80s classic into an absolute sleeper by injecting it with the DNA of a modern Subaru STI.
He had the vision in his head, but he needed to see it. He needed a "North Star" for his build to keep him motivated and to ensure all his aesthetic choices would work together in harmony. That’s where I stepped in.
The 1984 Subaru GL STI Custom
We worked together to conceptualize exactly what this classic wagon will look like once the dust settles in his garage. As you can see from the illustrations, the goal was to marry classic 80s angularity with aggressive, modern STI styling cues.
Here is how we brought his vision to the screen:
- The Iconic Palette: We cloaked the sharp, retro lines of the GL in the legendary "STI Blue." It instantly communicates the car's new performance pedigree while contrasting beautifully against the blacked-out bumpers and trim.
- Stance and Footwear: No STI tribute is complete without gold wheels. We opted for a deep-dish, multi-spoke gold mesh wheel setup with polished lips. We lowered the stance significantly to give the wagon an aggressive, track-ready presence.
- Custom Bodywork: To house the wider track and meaty tires, we designed custom bolt-on style fender flares. The key here was making sure the flares matched the utilitarian, sharp-edged aesthetic of the 1984 GL without looking out of place.
- The Details: Up front, we added yellow-tinted inner headlights for that classic rally-inspired look. Out back, a subtle but purposeful dual exhaust hints at the upgraded boxer rumble waiting under the hood.
