Unmasking the 2027 BMW M5 LCI: Neue Klasse Meets V8 Hybrid Muscle

FStripping away the heavy swirl wrap from Munich’s flagship super-sedan reveals a sharper, far more cohesive evolution of the G90 platform, brought to life in our latest exclusive illustrations of the 2027 BMW M5 LCI.

Although the seventh-generation M5 has only recently settled into showrooms, BMW is moving aggressively to align its entire portfolio with the visual and technological identity of the Neue Klasse era. By analyzing high-resolution photographs of camouflaged test prototypes lapping the Nürburgring—generously provided by our friend and renowned car paparazzo @wilcoblock—we have mapped the exposed hard points, cooling ducts, and lighting cutouts to virtually unveil the refreshed M5 well ahead of its official premiere.

From Spy Shots to Digital Reality: Decoding the Prototype

Translating a heavily disguised test mule into an accurate production illustration requires looking past the false body panels and optical tricks of the vinyl wrap[cite: 2, 3]. In the trackside spy photographs captured by @wilcoblock at the Nürburgring, several critical structural changes immediately stood out:

  • Recessed Upper Fascia Apertures: The camouflage wrap pulls tightly across a noticeably slimmer upper grille opening that sits flush with narrowed headlamp units.
  • Exposed Lower Cooling Architecture: Beneath the license plate mount, the prototype reveals a restructured central air dam divided by two prominent vertical struts, flanked by tall, upright outer air curtains.
  • Revised Sensor Packaging: Rather than dominating the center of the kidney grille with an oversized, exposed radar block, the sensor suite is integrated more discreetly into the bridge and lower intake structure.

Placing our finished rendering directly alongside the Nürburgring prototype illustrates how every shutline, intake vane, and lighting proportion lines up with the real-world test car.

Design Breakdown: How the 2027 M5 LCI Differs from the Pre-LCI Car

While the outgoing pre-LCI G90 M5 made an undeniable statement with its sheer mass and angular, multi-layered surfacing, its front fascia often felt visually divided between competing shapes. The Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) brings disciplined horizontal clarity to the nose, borrowing key cues from the Neue Klasse design language without sacrificing the aggressive stance demanded of a full-fat M car.

Under the Skin: Powertrain & Neue Klasse Tech

Beneath the redesigned bodywork, the 2027 BMW M5 LCI retains its formidable M Hybrid powertrain—a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged S68 V8 paired with a gearbox-mounted electric motor and an 18.6-kWh battery pack.

While stricter upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations have prompted BMW to recalibrate the internal combustion engine's standalone output in European markets, upgraded electric motor software ensures total system output remains at a staggering 717 horsepower (727 PS) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque, channeled through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive. Expect refined chassis tuning gathered from these Nürburgring test sessions, alongside a more vocal exhaust note.

Inside the cabin, the LCI is set for an equally dramatic overhaul. Stepping away from the current curved dual-screen setup and traditional iDrive rotary controller, the 2027 M5 will adopt BMW’s Panoramic Vision head-up projection across the base of the windshield, paired with the next-generation iDrive X central touchscreen interface and a redesigned flat-bottom M steering wheel.

What do you think of BMW’s decision to blend Neue Klasse cues into the G90 M5? Does the slimmer, horizontally connected front end fix the proportions of the pre-LCI car?
