Unmasking the Next-Gen Internal Combustion BMW M3: The S58 Meets Neue Klasse Design

The automotive world has been buzzing with news of the electric revolution, and for a moment, purists held their breath, wondering if the iconic roar of the BMW M3 was destined for the history books. Fortunately, the rumors are true, and the internal combustion engine is not going quietly into the night.

While BMW is indeed preparing an all-electric M3, they are brewing something equally spectacular for the traditionalists: the next-generation internal combustion BMW M3.

Recently, heavily camouflaged test mules of this exact model were spotted being pushed to the absolute limit at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. As an automotive illustrator, I see camouflage not as a disguise, but as a puzzle waiting to be solved. I took to my digital canvas to peel back the vinyl and see exactly what the future of BMW M looks like.

Here is how I unmasked the next chapter of the ICE M3.

The Legend Continues: The S58 Engine Lives On

Before we dive into the design, we have to talk about what makes an M3 a true M3: the powertrain.

Codenamed G84, this upcoming machine ensures that the legendary S58 engine—BMW’s masterpiece 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six—is here to stay. Slated to be sold alongside its revolutionary all-electric sibling, this new iteration promises to deliver the visceral sound, high-revving drama, and mechanical soul that driving enthusiasts demand.

To keep up with stringent modern emissions regulations, we can expect this updated S58 to feature advanced mild-hybrid technology. But make no mistake; the core of the experience will remain purely internal combustion. It will likely push well past the current 500-horsepower mark, sending power to a rear-biased M xDrive system to maintain that signature tail-happy BMW dynamic.

Nürburgring Sightings: Decoding the Camouflage

Spy photographers recently caught the G84 prototypes undergoing rigorous dynamic testing at the Nürburgring. Covered head-to-toe in BMW's dizzying swirl-pattern vinyl, the cars looked aggressive, planted, and incredibly fast. But the heavy cladding was doing its job, hiding the crucial design details from the public eye.

To create an accurate illustration of the final production car, I had to look past the optical illusions. When analyzing these spy shots, I don't just look at the silhouette. I track the light reflections bouncing off the test mules, study the depth of the shadows around the air intakes, and map the harsh cutlines where the prototype panels meet. By cross-referencing these physical cues with BMW’s newly established design language, the true shape of the car begins to emerge.

Unmasking the Future: My Exclusive Design Renderings

Translating those aggressive prototype lines into clean, production-ready body panels yielded some incredible surprises. I’ve virtually peeled back the camouflage, and the results represent a massive shift in BMW’s design ethos.

The Return of the Horizontal Grille

The most striking revelation? The controversial, polarizing vertical kidney grilles of the current G80 generation are gone. As you can see in my latest illustrations, the new ICE M3 adopts the sleek, shark-nosed Neue Klasse front fascia. It seamlessly integrates the headlights and a wider, horizontally stretched kidney grille into a single, cohesive, illuminated band across the front end.

A Brutal, Track-Ready Stance

While the front end is undeniably futuristic, the side profile and proportions are pure, classic M. I made sure to emphasize the dramatically flared wheel arches that swallow the widened track—a hallmark that separates a true M car from a standard 3 Series.

Aerodynamic Evolution

Looking closer at the renderings, you will notice the sculpted hood vents designed for extreme thermal management of the S58 engine. The lower front bumper utilizes a sharp, trimaran-style air intake system to feed the radiators and cool the massive brakes. A deeply muscular shoulder line runs the length of the car, giving it a brutally planted stance.

It’s an aerodynamic evolution that feels wildly futuristic, yet unmistakably rooted in BMW M motorsport heritage.

What Are Your Thoughts?

The G84 M3 proves that BMW isn't ready to abandon its petrol-powered heritage just yet. By blending the heart of the legendary S58 with the visionary design language of the Neue Klasse, this upcoming M3 might just be the perfect bridge between the brand's storied past and its electrified future.

What do you think of this new direction? Are you happy to see the vertical grilles go, and more importantly—if given the choice between the EV and the ICE S58, which key are you grabbing?
